David Ben Yosef,
This is all alluded to in the Torah and is talked about in the Midrash. The author of the story was referring to the Midrash in Genesis Rabbah 38.

You can learn more here (http://judaism.about.com/library/3_askrabbi_o/bl_simmons_abrahamidols.htm) and here(http://www.myjewishlearning.com/texts/Rabbinics/Midrash/Midrash_Aggadah/How_Midrash_Functions/Abraham_and_Sarah_in_Midrash.shtml).

Larry K,
Yes it is in the Qur'an because Mohammed learned it from the Jews. It is a Midrash. I can only think that the writers made the assumption that people would know this is based upon a Midrash.

You can see more about this here (http://judaism.about.com/library/3_askrabbi_o/bl_simmons_abrahamidols.htm).

Wow, there is one small problem with this story - the Torah does not say that Terach was an idolator. Not only that, he moved with Avram from Ur to Haran and died there. It does not say whether he worshipped HaShem or ever spoke with Him as did Avram, but that is a whole different story.
